Enhance your CV!

Jobseekers commonly feel confused by the minefield of CV protocol; according to a group of career coaches and professional CV writers, adhering to the following rules might just help...

1. Avoid unnecessary personal details: full name and contact details are of course required, but avoid information relating to age, race, political views and financial/homeowner status.

2. Dated information: will the mention of your paper-round boost your career? Most likely not, so save precious space for the information that will.

3. A photograph: not only unnecessary, but also opens up the possibility for appearance-based discrimination.

4. Salary expectations: salary discussions should be saved until offer discussions take plate. If you are working with an agency, the Consultant will often conduct such discussions on your behalf.

5. Untruths: even if you believe the lie is too small to be discovered, it is not worth risking your reputation. The adjustment of employment dates is a frequent occurrence, and one of the easiest details to check through referencing.

6. Confidential information about previous employers: maintain your integrity and professionalism at all times.

7. Reason for dismissal: your CV should promote you in a positive light, however when asked it is essential that you explain the situation honestly.

8. Excessively verbose comments: while positivity is essential, over-stating your responsibilities and experience is foolish. The level of your experience will always become known at interview stage.

9. 'References available on request:' this statement has been deemed dated as employers will always request references. Simply have the required information ready.

10. Too much information: consider your CV as one of a pile; the information provided should be concise and not overly lengthy.
