High Expectations?
Almost 9 in 10 students expect to secure a graduate level position on completion of their degree, with 60% of survey participants expecting a starting salary of £25,000 (despite the fact that over 70% acknowledged increased levels of competition as a result of the recession). Are these expectations realistic?
In the Bath region the average graduate starting salary ranges between £16,000 - £20,000, with those who have undertaken relevant work experience often commanding the higher end. For more specialist vacancies, requiring specific qualifications, the starting also salary tends to be higher.
While clients continue to value the vital skills offered by graduate employees, the number of graduate job-seekers currently on the market means that they have a vast pool from which to select. This requires graduates to pay particular attention to those 'soft skills' that can set them apart.
Consideration should be paid to: a well-formatted CV, professional communications, interview technique, personal presentation and interpersonal skills.
