Rejected by your email address?!

9 out of 10 HR professionals have admitted that an email address deemed inappropriate would impact upon their decision to shortlist a candidate.  This survey was conducted by an entertainment industry recruiter, but may well reflect a wider attitude.

This acts as a good reminder that in a competitive market there are some simple considerations that can be made to enhance your chances of making it to the 'to-see' pile...

  • A neutral email address is highly recommended - one that simply states your name will suffice!
  • Avoid the use of photographs on your CV, enabling prospective employers to draw conclusions by your appearance and opening up the opportunity for discrimination. If you can not resist including one, you should ensure that the image is smart and business-like.
  • If you are publicly listed on social networking sites, review the impression that you may be giving. Ensure that your language and photos can not incriminate or embarrass you!
  • Thought should also be given to your CV, which should be presented in a concise, professional format. Never present a crumpled CV and avoid asking businesses to photocopy it - you can always ask for an email address to send it on to. If you explain that it is your final copy, the recruiter may well offer to copy it for you.
  • If you are fortunate enough to be invited for interview take some time to consider your outfit - a classic suit is appropriate for all environments.
  • Always research the company and ensure that you know exactly where you are going so you can arrive in good time.
  • Finally, some thought paid to asking a few well-considered questions at the end of the interview will create a positive impression.
