Graduates lacking?
Recruiter.co.uk has today published an article in which Gary Ashworth, executive chairman of IT recruiter InterQuest, denounces today's graduates as 'consistently poor.'
Ashworth raises concern about graduates' lack of practical experience, saying that few university leavers are equipped with the required 'real-life' skills.
His experience suggests that many graduates are falling short when it comes to fundamentals such as an appropriate handshake, use of eye contact, considered questions, rapport building and time-keeping skills. Furthermore he is concerned by the standard of CVs produced, in addition to the lack of research conducted prior to interview.
Ashworth said "Many graduates do not bother to find out what a company does and do not come prepared with questions to ask. They don't have to necessarily wear a tie but don't young people clean their shoes or shave any more?"
He attributes some of the blame to universities, including those offering courses such as 'The Vampire in Literature and Cinema.'
The response of the article is mixed, with several recruiters in full support of Ashworth's argument. However, one reader, David Scarlett, responding: "While sympathising with some of Gary Ashworth's points, I do have a concern that today's employers seem to be expecting 'ready-made employees' without necessarily looking to invest too much in improving the 'soft skills' that new graduates often need to acquire. If someone is bright enough to achieve a good degree from a good university, there is a reasonable chance that with some guidance from their employer they will be able to master the art of handshaking and maintaining eye contact."
