Illegal Interns!
The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has warned that employers are unwittingly breaking the law by employing unpaid interns.
The IPPR believes that employers think that all is above-board, providing as both parties are in agreement that the work is voluntary; however this directly conflicts with the National Minimum Wage Act 1998 which states that however a position has been advertised, regardless of job title or whether a contract has been signed, workers are entitled to at least the set National Minimum Wage.
This rule does not apply to Charities, Voluntary organisations or Statutory bodies, all of who are entitled to employ workers on a Voluntary basis.
