Email Pointers for Candidates!

Appoint was interested to read LinkedIn's '8 Etiquette Rules for Job Seekers,' a concise set of pointers for candidates looking to compete in a crowded marketplace. When making your applications, ensure that you are doing each of the following:

1. An appropriate address: send all emails from a professional sounding address, if in doubt, set up a new account especially.

2. State your subject: never leave the subject line blank, your email might be filtered as spam. A concise and relevant statement is all that is required - e.g. 'John Smith's CV'

3. Cut the jargon: save your ‘LOL’ for your friends! All emails should be written in a professional and considered tone.

4. Keep it brief: compose a brief email stating the purpose of your contact. If additional information is required, make a brief mention and invite employers to contact you should they require further detail.

5. A smart signature: create an email signature providing your contact information, enabling potential recruiters to make contact with ease.

6. Sign off: remember to close your email with 'Kind Regards,' 'Yours Sincerely' or another appropriate phrase.

7. Check for the attachment: first ensure the 'attached CV' is actually attached, and then make certain it's the most up-to-date edition!

8. A timely response: adhering to the 24-hour email rule, remember to respond to recruiters/employers even if only with a holding message thanking them for some information that you need to consider.

As an additional rule, it is recommended that you always make the effort to compose an email with each application. It is surprising the number of blank messages that are sent with a random CV attachment.

Never forget that the first contact is the first impression!
