How to ruin your chances...

Businessinsider.com yesterday featured an article on the best ways to ruin your chances of getting a job when working with Headhunters and Recruiters. Their interesting list of don'ts includes:

1. Hold back information, including changes in your circumstances - never be perceived as anything less than honest.

2. Include vague descriptions & jargon on your CV - such a professional document should be easy to read at a glance, interpretation should not be required!

3. Leave it to others - remain aware of current vacancies within your market. While your recruiter will do their upmost to assist, they are working against very specific client briefs.

4. Fail to tailor your CV - take every opportunity to present yourself as keen and willing. Ensure your CV appropriately relates to each application you make.

5. Apply for what you aren't qualified for - while sometimes there is a fine line, it is always best to be taken seriously. Read the job specification closely to establish whether you are likely to be suitable.

6. Gain a poor online reputation - recruiters represent their clients and in turn candidates represent their recruiter. Ensure a polished, professional reputation both 'virtually' and in person.

7. Appear clueless - the best career guidance can be given to those with an understanding of their own key strengths, along with some knowledge of potential areas of interest.

8. Be afraid of your salary - recruiters are looking to match you to the most appropriate role. If you are flexible to earning less, say so.

9. Fail to personalise your communications - don't send a group email to 25 different recruiters, understand who you are sending your CV to (and ensure to spell their name correctly!)

10. Harass your recruiter - while the best recruiters welcome and implement regular communications, a daily call or email may be perceived as excessive.
